Year 4 have been reading ‘Street Child’ as part of their topic on the Victorians. They have recently read a chapter about an evil landlord who threw a poor family out on the streets because they failed to pay their rent. Here is an extract of a balanced argument debating whether or not the landlord should have thrown out the family.
On the other hand, Mr Spink is one man with an immense house, whereas the Jarvis family involves four people with nowhere else to go. If they have to leave their one, tiny room, they would be homeless and die. Nonetheless. It is Mr Spink’s house, so he can decide the rules. Also, he owns it so he can decide the rules and evict the Jarvis family, even if they have nowhere to go and it is Christmas.
