I became a parent governor in spring 2013 and am a member of the Resources and SEN subcommittees.
I have 1 child at DKH School (Minta in year 2) and my eldest, Isola, also attended DKH before moving on to Secondary school. Both girls really love the school and we have been impressed by the friendly atmosphere as well as the creativity and commitment of the staff and DKH friends.
Although I started my working life as a physiotherapist, 15 years ago I changed careers and retrained as a designer and now work 4 days a week designing interiors and exhibitions for museums and galleries. Our interior work can be anything from international hotels and restaurants to education rooms and toilets, whilst a lot of our recent exhibition work has been in London and includes the Cuming Museum and ‘Voyagers’ at the National Maritime Museum.
Working with spaces to create a sense of wellbeing or to tell a story has made me appreciate how the environments that we learn in can play a key part in our overall learning experience. We were lucky to be able to help recently with the design of the new reception area and key to that was showcasing the children’s creativity which is at the heart of the school.
In my role as an exhibition designer I am often working as part of a core team responsible for determining key aims and goals of a project and then translating this to agreed deliverables within tight budgets and timeframes. I enjoy debate and facilitating discussion where necessary to ensure all views are aired. I am happy to challenge and be challenged and feel that this collaborative brainstorming process is an important part of agreeing strategies that a whole team buys into.
I have a genuine interest in how DKH school is run and fully understand that the input from governors is vital to ensure that parents’ views are expressed and heard. As a parent it is easy to take for granted that the school will deliver the best possible education for our children. I can see however that there is a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure that this is done in a creative and inclusive way and I am really enjoying being a part of this process.
