Year 2 have been going outside for their learning this week. In Science, they have been thinking about habitats and, as well as learning about macro habitats, they have been investigating microhabitats. They looked around the school at a variety of different microhabitats including under rocks and stones, in leaf litter, in trees, under bushes and in the pond. They found many different living things including slugs, snails, ants, spiders, woodlice and worms. They also found many different plants.
Year 2 also had a visit from Ellie who works for the ‘Big City Butterflies’ project and learned about many different types of butterfly. They went to Lettsom Gardens to plant pollinators in the allotment, so that butterflies are attracted to the plants there. Did you know there are 59 different types of butterfly in Britain, but 2500 different types of moth?
