This morning we joined Palm class who were taking part in an exciting maths lesson demonstrating how to calculate fractions using coloured hoops and balls.
As you can see in the images below, Mr Newman is setting the children specific fraction puzzles to solve by offering 4 hoops (3 red and one yellow) with four balls in each hoop. This fraction is showing 3/4 of the whole number, which is 16. To calculate 3/4 of 16, you need to count how many balls in total are available within the three red hoops. In this case, the answer is 12. To calculate 1/4 of 16, you count how many balls are within the yellow hoop. In this case, there are 4 balls.
Mr Newman moved onto other fraction puzzles using more balls and more hoops, which can again be seen in the images below. The children really enjoyed this maths game and found it a very visual way to help them calculate fractions. Why not try this maths game at home or in the park?
