As a part of our “Celebrating our Sisters” theme for Black History Month this week, we welcomed back Margaret of Margaret’s Music who led a series of workshops where she presented a selection of amazing women who have inspired and influenced so many with their contributions to music.
Such inspiring women included Sister Rosetta Thorpe; an American singer and guitarist who shot to fame in the 30s and 40s. We also hear about Una Winifred Atwell, a Trinidadian pianist who enjoyed great popularity in Britain and Australia from the 1950s with a series of boogie-woogie and ragtime hits, selling over 20 million records. he was the first black artist to have a number-one hit in the UK Singles Chart and as of 2023, remains the only female instrumentalist to do so.
The children found the workshops both exciting and extremely inspiring. A huge thank you to Margaret for taking the time to come and and share her expertise with us.
We took some pictures of Margaret’s visit, which can be seen in the gallery below. Pleas click on the thumbnails for a larger view.
