To start of their History topic of Changes in Britain from the ‘Stone Age to the Bronze Age’, Years 3 and 4 went to the Horniman Museum.
Eucalyptus Class, Palm Class and Beech Class went on a Prehistoric Life Trail and partook in a Prehistoric Britain Workshop. On the Prehistoric Life Trail, the children explored the museum and the gardens and learnt about people’s transition from a ‘hunter-gather’ way of life to one of farming.
Mammoth tusks, deer antlers and axe heads were among the items the children had to find within the museum’s collection. During the workshop, children were presented with a (fake) skeleton that had different items alongside it depending on what age we were looking at.
The children were able to make inferences about people’s lives in the past through the careful study of these artefacts and know the differences between the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age), Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), Neolithic (New Stone Age) and the Bronze Age periods of time.
